Instructions

The term “mountaineering” refers to the sport or hobby of mountain climbing. Unlike trail climbing, which is when you walk on a trail, mountaineering refers to mountain ascents where the inclines and severities of the terrains require climbing and the use of specialized equipment. Different styles of mountaineering have evolved over the years; however, three general styles exist: alpinism, high-altitude mountaineering, and ultra-lightweight mountaineering. Each requires experience, athletic abilities, and technical knowledge.

Alpinism was developed hundreds of years ago by alpine guides in the European Alps, the largest mountain range in Europe. Today, it refers to mountain climbing below 5,000 meters. Alpinists move as quickly as possible using the least amounts of equipment as possible through terrains, which are snow and ice-covered. High-altitude mountaineering refers to mountain climbing above 5,000 meters. Participants carry food and equipment and establish camps at different points in the ascent to rest, to prepare for the next day, and so that they can acclimate to changes in altitudes. Ultra-lightweight mountaineering is the ascent of high-altitude peaks in short amounts of time while using minimal, lightweight equipment.
