Proponents of organic farming today argue that the benefits of organic fertilizers and pesticides include improving soil qualities, fostering healthy plant root developments, and minimal negative environmental impacts. Because some types of fertilizers and pesticides can be dangerous to people and the environment, the U.S. government has kept a close watch on pesticides and the chemicals used in them; some chemicals, like aldicarb, have been banned from production.

Farms which are wanting to grow and sell organic produce or livestock must be certified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and undergo inspections each year. The USDA sets standards for seed suppliers, handling of products, crop and soil management, land conditions, and product labeling—they also impose certification fees. This is one of the reasons why purchasing organic commodities is more expensive for consumers.
