The brain is like an amazing machine capable of infinite possibilities, but it takes years to develop fully. Children’s brains experience massive growth spurts when they are young. A child’s brain is approximately 95% of its adult size by age 6, by age 30 the brain is fully matured. During adolescence, the brain undergoes significant changes. These changes have direct impacts on how teenagers behave.

Some teens act recklessly and take too many risks. These behaviors are controlled by a section of the brain known as the prefrontal cortex. Located in the frontal lobe, the prefrontal cortex performs three important functions weighing outcomes, forming judgements, and controlling impulses and emotions.Because the prefrontal cortex is not fully developed during the teenage years, adolescents are more likely to engage in dangerous or risky behaviors.
